Larnaca

Larnaca is the 3rd largest town in Cyprus with a population of approximately 100,000 people and home to the Islands main international airport. For many visitors Larnaca town offers the first taste of Cyprus.  

The town itself can be traced back to the Bronze Age when the Mycenaens colonised it in the 13th Century BC. Then known as Kition, it was given its name by Kitim, son of Noah. Later on, under the rule of the Turks it became an important trading centre and was renamed Larnaca, its name deriving from the Greek word Lanex (coffin) after the many ancient coffins found on Kition’s grounds.

Today Larnaca is one of the most modern towns in Cyprus and is popular with both Cypriots and tourists alike. The town has been developed extensively and has a wonderful palm tree promenade and marina that attracts yachtsmen from all over the world.

In Larnaca you will find many places of interest, St Lazarus Church in the town center, the 17th century fort at the western end of the promenade and the ancient archeological site of Kition to name just a few. It is also worth visiting the famous Great Salt Lakes which offers temporary refuge to thousands of migrating pink flamingoes in the winter months – a spectacular site!
