About Cyprus

Cyprus is the easternmost Island in the Mediterranean and the third largest. It has a population of approximately 750,000, but as a popular all year round tourist resort this can swell to double in the summer months. Boasting 340 days of sunshine a year the mild climate is a big attraction for visitors with temperatures reaching in the popular months of July and August.

The varied geography of the Island’s 3572 sq metres offers something for everyone. In the Famagusta region you will find glorious sandy beaches that stretch for miles meeting the sparkling clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.  Go further in land and you will find the mountainous region of the Troodos, Cyprus is truly one of the only Islands in the world where you can ski and swim on the same day!  Achieving this is made easier by the efficient motorway system on the Island. The modern structure offers easy access to all parts of the Island and driving is on the left hand side.

Cyprus is an Island steeped in history and the Cypriots are extremely proud of their cultural heritage. On the Island you will find many monuments, archeological sites, forts, churches and castles, the oldest dating back some 10,000 years. Old traditions and customs are respected by young and old alike and very much kept alive on the Island. Festivals such as Carnival and Anthestiria, in honour of God Dioysos are examples of age old traditions mixing with the new.

Cyprus is now the only country in the World that has a divided capital. Since the Turkish invasion in 1974 Nicosia has remained a city of two halves. The capital is a bustling, commercially thriving city with fantastic shopping and numerous sophisticated restaurants, bars and clubs. The borders to the northern side of the Island opened up in May 2005 when Cyprus joined the EU and it is now possible to visit the Turkish occupied area.

The flavour of Cyprus living is friendly and easy going and this is perhaps one of the main attractions of the Island. The Cypriot hospitality is world-renowned and many people who are considering an investment property abroad often decide on Cyprus as their second home due to this fact. House purchases in Cyprus have increased considerably in the last few years with many people choosing to make Cyprus their permanent home.

Island Contours

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Its 9,251 square kilometres (3,572 square miles) encompass citrus and olive groves, pine forested mountains, and some of Europe's cleanest beaches. Also the easternmost island in the Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus is approximately 105kilometres (60 miles) west of Syria, 75kilometres (47 miles) south of Turkey and 380kilometres (200 miles) north of Egypt. The nearest Greek point is the Greek island of Rhodes which is 380kilometres (200miles) to the west. The island has a mild, typically Mediterranean climate, with abundant sunshine even in winter and little rainfall. Prominent geographic features include the Troodos massif that occupies most of the southwestern part of the country, the Pentadaktylos range in the north around Kyrenia and the Messaoria Plain in between them. It is here that the capital city, Lefkosia, is located.

The elongated Karpasia Peninsula occupies the northeastern part of Cyprus, while the southeastern point terminates in Cape Gkreco. The southern coast is where the major towns of Larnaka and Lemesos are located. Pafos and the Akamas Peninsula are on the far western edge.

The latitude of Cyprus is 34° 33'-35° 34' North, and its longitude 32° 16'-34° 37' East.
